Friday 17th September

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 6! 

We completed our Health and Wellbeing project, ‘Walking in Their Shoes’, bringing together what we discovered through our interviews. The children also created paper-mâché shoes to represent their interviewee and enjoyed completing their final pieces. 

We also began our core subjects – Literacy, Maths and Topic. The children have settled well into their routines and have enjoyed getting stuck into their new learning. 

In Literacy, we have been exploring the text ‘The Gas Mask’. The children created their own story maps to represent the key events and have begun exploring similes and metaphors. 

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 1,000,000 and using this knowledge to compare and order numbers. 

We have also launched our new History topic, Britain at War, focusing on the outbreak of World War One. To begin our topic, the children took part in a WW1 Immersion Day, completing three activities: 

  • WW1 Bootcamp 

  • Outdoor Trench Challenge 

  • A Day in the Life Experience Stations 

The children approached each activity with enthusiasm and positivity, enjoying a range of practical challenges that helped them immerse themselves in life during WW1. It was a fantastic way to begin our new History topic! 

 

Important Information for Next Week 

  • Thursday 24th September – House meetings. Aspiring house captains to give their speech to their house. 

  • Thursday 24th September – Year 6 will be taking part in their first outdoor learning session. Please ensure they wear their school uniform and come to school with wellies and a waterproof coat.  

  • Friday 25th September – PE afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit. 

  • Walk Home Arrangements: Please ensure that your child's walk home information has been updated on ParentPay. 

  • Healthy Snacks: Please ensure that your child brings a healthy snack each day to enjoy during morning break. 

How can you help at home? 

We would like children to recap their times tables regularly in preparation for our upcoming work on multiplication. Being able to recall times tables quickly and confidently is an important skill that will support children across many areas of mathematics. Please see QR code for a link to a times table game.  

Please also ensure that your child is reading at home every day. Reading regularly is incredibly important for developing vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and confidence. Even a short period of reading each evening can make a real difference to your child’s progress.
