Y6 Blog Friday 2nd October

In Literacy, we have been continuing with our portal story, The Gas Mask. We have been learning how to add contrast to our writing to make our settings more exciting and engaging for the reader.

In Maths, we are continuing with our daily five minutes of mental maths practice, and the children are becoming increasingly confident with these activities. We have now moved on to addition and subtraction and have revisited the different strategies the children can use to help them solve calculations.

In Topic, we have enjoyed our session with the volunteers from Barry War Museum. We learnt lots and particularly loved hearing and joining in with some songs from the era. We have also been learning about conscription and how, during the First World War, men were legally required to join the army. The children explored different viewpoints and started writing persuasive texts explaining whether they felt conscription was a positive or negative thing.

On Thursday, we had our first outdoor learning session with Mrs King. We planted daffodils, tulips, pansies, violas, conifers, lamb’s ears and some herbs. The children loved the opportunity to be outside in nature and can’t wait for next week already!

How can you help at home?

We have noticed that some children do not enjoy reading at home. We completely understand that children may feel that reading is a skill they have already mastered, but reading is about so much more than simply being able to read the words on a page. Regular reading helps children to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and fluency. It also introduces them to new ideas, experiences and perspectives.

We would really encourage you to make time for reading at home each day. This could be reading their schoolbook, sharing a story together, reading a magazine or comic, or even discussing something they have found interesting online.  Over the next two weeks, we would like the children to complete a reading diary and bring it into school for us to see. This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the reading they are doing at home and encourage them to make reading part of their daily routine. As an extra incentive, children who complete their reading diary will receive extra playtime as a reward! We hope this will encourage everyone to get involved and, most importantly, enjoy reading together at home.

Thank you for your continued support!
