Creativity, Curiosity and Skills in Action through STEAM

There has been lots of exciting practical learning taking place across Romilly through our STEAM programme.

STEAM brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics, giving children opportunities to develop their creativity, problem-solving and practical skills. From Reception through to Year 6, our children take part in a dedicated STEAM session each week, led by members of our staff team.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a fantastic range of learning taking place.

In Year 3, children have been developing their food technology skills. They planned, prepared and cooked their own savoury dish, making delicious vegetable fajitas. As well as enjoying the finished product, the children developed important skills in preparing ingredients, following instructions and working safely and hygienically with food.

Year 4 have been exploring textiles and learning the traditional skill of weaving. Using cardboard looms, the children have been learning how different threads and techniques can be combined to create their own woven designs.

Food technology has also been on the menu in Year 5. Children have been learning about seasonality, food hygiene and recipes before putting their knowledge into practice by preparing and making their own vegetable soup. Another Year 5 group has been exploring mixed-media art, learning the intricate craft technique of quilling to create detailed pieces of artwork.

Inspired by the wartime ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign, the children have been developing their sewing skills and considering the importance of reusing materials. They have created their own scented lavender bags, made even more special by using lavender grown here at Romilly.

These projects are a great example of what STEAM learning is all about: children learning through designing, making, experimenting, creating and problem-solving. Along the way, they are developing practical skills, independence, resilience and creativity — and, most importantly, having the opportunity to see their ideas become something real.

We are looking forward to seeing what our young scientists, designers, engineers, artists, cooks and creators make next!
