Outdoor Learning At Romilly

Outdoor Learning at Romilly Primary School

At Romilly Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Outdoor learning is an important part of our curriculum, providing rich, meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity, develop independence and support children's wellbeing. It offers opportunities for pupils to make connections with their classroom learning, explore the world around them and develop the skills they need to become confident, resilient and enthusiastic learners.

We are incredibly fortunate to have wonderful outdoor spaces at Romilly, including our fantastic forest area and dedicated allotment, where children can explore nature, develop practical skills and learn about growing food, sustainability and caring for the environment. From Nursery through to Year 1, all classes also benefit from their own outdoor learning areas, ensuring that opportunities for exploration, discovery and purposeful play are embedded in children's everyday learning experiences.

We recognise that some of the most valuable learning happens when children have the freedom to investigate, experiment, collaborate and take managed risks. Through outdoor learning, our pupils develop important skills such as problem-solving, communication, teamwork, creativity and resilience. These experiences also support physical development, emotional wellbeing and an appreciation of the natural world.

Our outdoor environments provide opportunities to bring the curriculum to life, whether children are investigating habitats, developing mathematical understanding, exploring language and storytelling, growing vegetables or simply enjoying the freedom and excitement of learning outside.

At Romilly, outdoor learning is not simply an occasional activity or a reward. It is an important part of how we learn, supporting our commitment to providing an inclusive, engaging and ambitious curriculum where every child has opportunities to flourish.
