We’ve had another busy and positive week of learning in Year 6!

In Literacy, continuing with ‘The Gas Mask’ our pupils have been working on sentences of 3 to develop descriptive settings, parenthesis to provide the reader with extra information and pathetic fallacy to affect the atmosphere and mood of our portal stories.

In Maths, we are doing 5 minutes of quick mental maths practice daily and we have continued to compare and order numbers up to 7 digits. At present we are working with powers of 10, multiplying and dividing, moving numbers right or left depending on the number of zeros, rounding up and down, as well as column addition.

In Topic, we are drawing portraits of WW1 soldiers, creating multiple drafts using real life photographs and constructive peer-feedback to improve. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our volunteers from Barry War Museum next week, the effort they put into providing real life soldier experiences and recounts for our pupils is impressive.

On Thursday year 6 pupils were due a taste of outdoor learning with Mrs King however due to sickness that was not possible, but we took the children on a tour of the outside spaces, and they seem keen to get started, even if there are spiders!

It was a difficult decision for our younger pupils to make but the votes were cast, and the pupil voice was heard,

We completed our Health and Wellbeing project, ‘Walking in Their Shoes’, bringing together what we discovered through our interviews. The children also created paper-mâché shoes to represent their interviewee and enjoyed completing their final pieces.

We also began our core subjects – Literacy, Maths and Topic. The children have settled well into their routines and have enjoyed getting stuck into their new learning.

In Literacy, we have been exploring the text ‘The Gas Mask’. The children created their own story maps to represent the key events and have begun exploring similes and metaphors.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 1,000,000 and using this knowledge to compare and order numbers.

We have also launched our new History topic, Britain at War, focusing on the outbreak of World War One. To begin our topic, the children took part in a WW1 Immersion Day, completing three activities:

This week, our new Year 6 cohort has started the school year with an exciting Health and Wellbeing project. Working together as a team, we have explored what empathy means and considered what life might be like when we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. We have enjoyed lessons exploring the difference between sympathy and empathy, the importance of hearing and actively listening, and how to use open and closed questions effectively.

We have also explored children’s rights and considered the different perspectives of staff members who have a variety of roles and responsibilities within our school. We are building towards an exciting opportunity to interview members of staff, finding out more about what life at Romilly is like from their point of view.

Alongside our Health and Wellbeing work, we have also put our mathematical thinking to the test! Using our prior knowledge of maths, we have described ourselves through calculations and codes, combining creativity, problem-solving and numeracy skills.

Important information for next week

Jump In Day: Thursday 17th September - Step back in time and experience life during World War I. Children will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the past and explore what life was like for people during WW1. Children can come to school dressed as someone from the WW1 era, such as, Soldiers, Nurses, Factory workers or Children. As part of the day, the children will be learning outdoors and exploring what life was like in the trenches, so please bear this in mind when choosing their outfit and footwear.

Healthy Snacks: Please ensure that your child brings a healthy snack each day to enjoy during our morning break.

How can you help at home?

We would like children to recap their times tables regularly in preparation for our upcoming work on multiplication. Being able to recall times tables quickly and confidently is an important skill that will support children across many areas of mathematics.
