Our Year 6 pupils recently joined children from local primary schools for an exciting Coastal Science and Climate Change Field Trip at Whitmore Bay, organised by the Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre. Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of hands-on activities, including building coastal defences, investigating coastal erosion, exploring the effects of sea level rise, taking part in a treasure hunt and becoming 'Super Scientists'.

The trip provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding of climate change and the local coastline, while also helping to support their transition to secondary school. A huge thank you to the Wales Coastal Monitoring Centre and all of the volunteers who made the day such a memorable experience for our children

As part of our arrangements during the current spell of exceptionally hot weather, we have created a Heatwave Home Learning Menu for our children to enjoy at home.

The menu includes a range of fun and engaging activities inspired by summer and the sunshine, including:

☀️ Becoming a weather watcher
💧 Carrying out simple science investigations
🎨 Getting creative through art and design
📚 Reading and storytelling activities
🧘‍♀️ Taking part in mindful movement and relaxation
🌿 Exploring nature safely outdoors

The activities are designed to be flexible and enjoyable and are entirely optional. There is no expectation for children to complete every activity. Instead, we encourage families to choose a few activities that appeal to them and enjoy learning together in a relaxed way.

With temperatures remaining very high, our priority is that everyone stays safe and well. We encourage all families to:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Stay in the shade during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Wear lightweight clothing and sun hats when outdoors.

Apply sun cream regularly.

Take time to rest, relax and enjoy some quality family time together.

We hope our Heatwave Home Learning Menu provides some inspiration and helps children stay curious, creative and connected to learning while keeping cool.

The menu can be downloaded below.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and understanding.

It links to our topic on climate change and will help us reduce our costs and carbon footprint. We look forward to seeing them again on Monday during our educational beach visit. This is a great chance to learn about coastal erosion and also to mingle with other primary schools in Barry.

Year 2 cooking club recently enjoyed their final session of the term with a delicious activity – making chocolate brownies!

The children were excited to follow the recipe, carefully measuring ingredients, mixing, and preparing their tasty treats. There was a wonderful buzz in the room as everyone worked together, practising important cooking skills and teamwork.

However, the session did not go entirely to plan! A small mishap occurred when some of the brownies ended up a little more “well done” than expected – a situation that was light-heartedly blamed on Mrs Gilbert! Despite this minor setback, spirits remained high and the children still had a great time.

All was certainly not lost. Thanks to the quick thinking and kindness of Mrs Figueres, who very kindly rushed home to prepare replacement brownies for the following day, everyone was still able to enjoy a delicious treat.

It was a fun and memorable way to end the cooking club, full of laughter, learning, and a reminder that even when things don’t go perfectly, teamwork and positivity can save the day!

Pupils in Year 2 and Year 3 recently took part in an exciting and informative visit from a Police Liaison Officer, who came into school to teach them all about staying safe in the community.

During the visit, the officer spoke to the children about the important role the police play in helping people and keeping everyone safe. The children learned how to recognise when a situation might be risky and what they can do to protect themselves if they feel unsure or worried.

The children were enthusiastic and engaged throughout the visit, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their own ideas about keeping safe. They particularly enjoyed seeing some of the police equipment and learning how officers communicate while on duty.

This valuable experience has helped pupils to feel more confident and aware of how to stay safe both in school and in the wider community. The school would like to thank the Police Liaison Officer for taking the time to deliver such an important and memorable session.

Report Summary for Parents and Carers

Through exceptional leadership and the collective efforts of the school community, improvement at Romilly Primary School happens quickly. The focus on ensuring that pupils receive effective teaching and a curriculum that meets their needs means that most make strong progress in their learning. This includes pupils with additional learning needs (ALN), with English as an additional language (EAL) and those from low-income families. Particularly noteworthy is the rapid progress older pupils make in their writing, where they often produce excellent work.

Teaching develops pupils’ knowledge and skills across the areas of learning and experience well. As a result, most pupils’ progress in literacy and mathematics is strong, and they frequently achieve high standards in their digital, creative and scientific work. Pupils know how to keep themselves safe and healthy, displaying good physical skills. They have the social and emotional skills to prepare them for adult life and appreciate the high levels of care and support that staff provide.

Most pupils love learning and experience high levels of well-being. From a very young age, they have well-developed independent skills, and their behaviour is exemplary. Remarkably impressive is how carefully they listen to feedback from staff and their classmates. They use this to improve their work and are often motivated to return to it to make it even better, when they have learnt new skills or techniques.

The professional relationship between leaders and governors is a significant strength. Together, they manage change very effectively, providing assured and purposeful leadership of the school. Decision-making is thoughtful, strategic and in the best interest of pupils and their families, despite the financial challenges the school faces. Leaders are sensitive in ensuring that cost is not an obstacle to pupils engaging in the full range of learning experiences the school offers. They recognise the complexity of the barriers to pupils attending school and ensure that families receive sensitive, tailored support. As a result, the attendance of pupils eligible for free school meals shows notable improvement.

The school’s self-evaluation activities are robust. Leaders recognise, for example, the need to continue to improve pupils’ listening and speaking skills in the Welsh language. Through high quality professional learning for staff, they ensure that the school focuses its efforts on the aspects of its work that make the biggest difference to pupils’ learning and well-being.
