Week 4 in Year 6

We’ve had another busy and positive week of learning in Year 6!

In Literacy, continuing with ‘The Gas Mask’ our pupils have been working on sentences of 3 to develop descriptive settings, parenthesis to provide the reader with extra information and pathetic fallacy to affect the atmosphere and mood of our portal stories.

In Maths, we are doing 5 minutes of quick mental maths practice daily and we have continued to compare and order numbers up to 7 digits. At present we are working with powers of 10, multiplying and dividing, moving numbers right or left depending on the number of zeros, rounding up and down, as well as column addition.

In Topic, we are drawing portraits of WW1 soldiers, creating multiple drafts using real life photographs and constructive peer-feedback to improve. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our volunteers from Barry War Museum next week, the effort they put into providing real life soldier experiences and recounts for our pupils is impressive.

On Thursday year 6 pupils were due a taste of outdoor learning with Mrs King however due to sickness that was not possible, but we took the children on a tour of the outside spaces, and they seem keen to get started, even if there are spiders!

Aspiring year 6 leaders had the chance to make their case to their house team mates as to why they should be considered for either the House captain or vice-captain. It was a difficult decision for our younger pupils to make but the votes were cast, and the pupil voice was heard,

Cadoc  –   House Captains: Bella & Caleb

  • Vice Captains: Oscar & Elouise

Baruc  –   House Captains: Ieuan & Freya

  • Vice Captains: Nell & Wilson

Dyfan  –   House Captains: Pierre & Erin

  • Vice Captains: Roman & Amber

  • Vice Captains: Viola & (TBC)

Important Information for Next Week

  • Remember to check newsletter for after-school clubs which are in full swing.
  • Thursday 1st October – Year 6 will be taking part in their second outdoor learning session. Please ensure they wear their school uniform and come to school with wellies and a waterproof coat.
  • Friday 2nd October – PE afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit.
  • Walk Home Arrangements: Please ensure that your child's walk home information has been updated on ParentPay.
  • Healthy Snacks: Please ensure that your child brings a healthy snack each day to enjoy during morning break.

How can you help at home?

We would like children to recap their times tables regularly in preparation for our upcoming work on multiplication. Being able to recall times tables quickly and confidently is an important skill that will support children across many areas of mathematics. Please see QR code for a link to a times table game.

Please also ensure that your child is reading at home every day. Reading regularly is incredibly important for developing vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and confidence. Even a short period of reading each evening can make a real difference to your child’s progress.

Thank you for your continued support!

The Year 6 team.
