This week’s learning
What a wonderful first term in Year 4 we have had. This week, we have used the skills we have been developing to write our full stories. We have been amazed by the children's story-writing skills, creativity and determination as they completed their final pieces of writing. It has been wonderful to see them applying their learning and taking such pride in their work. The effort they have put into their final writes has been fantastic!
In maths, we have been learning to multiply using the grid method. The children have worked hard to partition numbers and use this method to solve multiplication calculations. We will need to revisit and recap this method after half term to help the children build their confidence and fluency. A little practice at home, where possible, would be extremely beneficial.
In our topic lessons, we have been learning about Sutton Hoo and its importance in understanding Anglo-Saxon history. The children have been exploring what these incredible discoveries can tell us about the past and how archaeologists use evidence to piece together history.
Important information for after half term
-Spellings: Our weekly spellings get sent home on a Monday. Please spend some time practising these with your child in preparation for their spelling test the following week.
- PE: Year 4 PE will take place every Thursday. Please ensure that children come to school wearing their PE kit on this day. This should include black shorts or joggers, a plain white T-shirt and trainers.
How can you help at home?
Reading- When reading with your child, please ask questions such as:
What do you think might happen next?
How would you describe this character?
Can you find an interesting word or phrase?
What would you change about the story?
Maths – Grid Method
It would be helpful for the children to practise multiplication using the grid method over half term. In particular, please focus on:
One-digit × two-digit numbers, for example, (4 x 23).
Two-digit × one-digit numbers, using partitioning to split the larger number into tens and ones before multiplying. Encourage your child to partition the two-digit number, multiply each part separately and then add the answers together.
We hope you have a lovely half- term!
