Y6 Blog Post Friday 9th October

Week 6 in Year 6
We are well into this half term now and what another fantastic week we have had in Year 6!
In Literacy, we have begun planning and writing our own portal stories with a wartime theme. The children have been building on their understanding of a range of grammatical devices and are now putting these skills into practice in their own writing. Our shared write has given the children the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt and apply these techniques creatively. We are very excited to read their finished stories!
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of multiplication and building on our previous knowledge of the column method to complete formal multiplication calculations. There have been some challenges along the way, but the children have shown fantastic perseverance and determination, particularly when tackling calculations that they initially found tricky.
In Topic, we have completed a persuasive piece of writing about conscription during World War One. The children used their understanding of recruitment and conscription to consider whether they were for or against conscription. They then developed their arguments and produced a persuasive piece of writing, with the aim of convincing their reader that their viewpoint was correct. They have also conducted a formal debate related to propaganda which was really effective and all children contributed fantastic ideas.
In outdoor learning this week, we took part in different activities in our woodland area, with the goal of making it more accessible and child-friendly. We did some litter picking, apple picking and general woodland management. See the school's outdoor learning Blog post for more information and photos.
We received a very exciting delivery this week from Queen Camilla! To mark her 79th birthday and support the UK’s National Reading Year 2026, Queen Camilla sent a special copy of Katherine Rundell’s Impossible Creatures to every Year 6 child. We were especially excited to receive the books as we are currently enjoying another fantastic novel by the same author in class. The children were thrilled to receive their own copy and are looking forward to discovering the magical world of Impossible Creatures for themselves!

Finally, it was lovely to meet so many of our parents at our first Year 6 Parents’ Evening and share the wonderful start to Year 6 that the children have had. Building strong connections between home and school is incredibly important and we really value working together to support the children’s learning, wellbeing and progress throughout their final year of primary school.

How can you help at home?
Please continue with your reading diary at home and bring this in next week.
In Maths, practising timetables regularly will help to build confidence and fluency, particularly as we continue to develop our multiplication skills. You could also challenge your child with everyday multiplication problems, such as working out the total cost of several items or calculating quantities. Topmarks Hit the Button and Daily 10 are recommended sites to use.
Thank you for your support, as always.
Year 6 Team.
