Week 7 in Year 6
In Literacy, the children have completed their shared write for their portal stories. They were challenged to include a range of ambitious grammatical techniques to help them vividly describe two contrasting settings. The children worked incredibly hard to write, edit and up-level their work, applying their learning to make their stories as effective and engaging as possible.
In Maths, the children have been developing their division skills, using the formal method of short division to divide numbers up to four digits, including calculations with remainders. This presented a challenge for some, but the children demonstrated fantastic perseverance and positive learning behaviours throughout, showing determination to overcome difficulties and improve their understanding.
In Topic, we have been incorporating our DCF skills to research and record information about the countries involved in the Allied and Central Powers during World War One. The children inputted their findings into an Excel spreadsheet before using their mathematical skills to analyse the data. They have also begun creating an information page exploring a day in the life of a soldier. They will continue developing this next week, building their understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by soldiers during the war.

During outdoor learning this week, the children checked on their planters and removed any unwanted weeds. They also took part in harvesting in the allotment area and helped to gather compostable waste. The children worked incredibly well together and used the gardening tools safely and effectively. We were particularly impressed by their determination when tackling some impressively large weeds and the extensive roots in the allotment!

Finally, we celebrated our Harvest Festival this week. A huge thank you to all the families who kindly donated to support this special occasion. Our House and Vice Captains have spent the past couple of weeks visiting classrooms and collecting donations and it was wonderful to see such generosity from our school community. Thank you for helping to make our Harvest Festival such a positive and meaningful celebration!

How can you help at home?
In Maths, practising timestables regularly will help to build confidence and fluency, particularly as we continue to develop our multiplication skills. You could also challenge your child with everyday multiplication problems, such as working out the total cost of several items or calculating quantities. Topmarks Hit the Button and Daily 10 are recommended sites to use.
Thank you for your support.
Year 6 Team.
