Y3 Friday 18th September

  1. This week’s learning

This week, Year 3 have had a fun-filled and exciting week as we introduced our new topic, ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’! We have been fully immersing ourselves in our new topic through lots of exciting food-related activities. The children enjoyed creating their own fairy bread, decorating delicious biscuits and, on Friday, enjoying their treats during a lovely afternoon picnic with their favourite soft teddies.

We have also enjoyed food tasting, where the children had the opportunity to try a variety of different fruits and vegetables. It has been wonderful to see the children exploring new flavours and sharing their thoughts and opinions. These activities have been a fantastic way to introduce Year 3 to our first topic of the year and have certainly made for a memorable start!

In Literacy, the children have been learning all about onomatopoeia words and phrases. We have been exploring how these words can bring our writing to life and make it much more exciting for the reader. The children have been working hard to include both adjectives and onomatopoeia in their sentences, creating fantastic descriptive sentences of three. The children have really enjoyed experimenting with different sounds and vocabulary, and it has been lovely to see their creativity shine through in their writing!

In mathematics, we have been focusing on odd and even numbers and hundreds, tens and ones. We have been developing our understanding of place value and learning how the position of a digit affects its value within a number. We have also been practising identifying odd and even numbers and explaining how we know whether a number is odd or even. The children have enjoyed using practical resources, number lines and a range of activities to help develop their understanding and confidence.

  In phonics, children have been practising their sounds and applying their phonics knowledge when reading and writing.

  2. Important information for next week

  • PE Reminder: Children have PE every Tuesday, so please ensure they come to school wearing their full PE kit on this day.

  • If your child hasn’t already brought one in, please could they bring a clean, empty plastic bottle into school for an exciting topic activity we will be completing the following week. If you have any spare plastic bottles at home, we would really appreciate any extra donations. Thank you!

  • For children in Miss Newman’s Literacy Group, please encourage them to practise reading the books that are sent home. These books will usually be sent home on a Tuesday.

    3. How you can help at home

You can help your child at home by:

  • Continue counting backwards from 100. For example, 100,99,98 and 55,54,53.

  • Practice counting over the 100 barrier up to 1000. For example, 98 ,99, 100,101 and 698, 699, 700, 701,702

  • Practice partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. For example,

426 = 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 6 ones.
