Y3 Blog Friday 9th October

This week
Year 3 has thoroughly enjoyed learning all about food from around the world! As part of our topic learning, the children have explored different foods that are grown and enjoyed in countries across the globe. We have been discovering where different foods come from and how climate, geography and culture can influence the foods that people eat. The children have enjoyed exploring a variety of foods from different countries and developing their understanding of where our food comes from. They have been encouraged to share their own experiences, make comparisons between different foods and think about how food travels from different parts of the world before reaching our shops and homes.
In Literacy, Year 3 have been busy getting ready to write their exciting hot task based on George’s Marvellous Medicine! The children have been exploring the original story and are now beginning to plan their own innovative versions, using the structure and ideas from Roald Dahl’s text to inspire their writing. We have been ‘hugging the text’ by keeping the familiar story structure while making changes to create our own unique marvellous medicines and characters. To help us organise our ideas, the children have been creating picture plans for each part of their story. These pictures will act as a visual guide when they begin writing, helping them to remember the sequence of events, develop their ideas and include lots of exciting details. We have been thinking carefully about what ingredients our characters might use, what happens when the medicine is made and the hilarious consequences that could follow! The children have been incredibly creative with their ideas and are very excited to bring their own marvellous medicines to life through their writing.

In Maths, we have been working hard on understanding numbers on a number line and identifying the midpoint between numbers up to 1,000. The children have been developing their understanding of place value and using their knowledge of numbers to work out what number belongs in the middle of a number line. This has been a challenging concept for some of us, but the children have shown fantastic perseverance and resilience when faced with tricky problems.

How you can help at home
Maths - Practice finding the midpoint on a number line. For example, on a number line from 0–1000, 500 is the midpoint.
Reading - Continue reading with your child everyday, ask questions about the story for comprehension.
Topic - Have a look through your cupboards at home with your child and see how many different foods you can find from around the world.
