RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE)

At Romilly Primary School, we want every child to grow into a healthy, confident and respectful individual. Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is an important part of achieving this ambition and forms a statutory element of the Curriculum for Wales.

This page has been created to help parents and carers understand what RSE looks like at Romilly Primary School, why it is taught and how it supports our children to develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to navigate an increasingly complex world.

What is RSE?

Relationships and Sexuality Education is about much more than sex education. At its heart, RSE helps children to build healthy, safe and positive relationships with themselves and with others.

Through RSE, children learn about:

  • healthy friendships and family relationships,
  • kindness, empathy and respect for others,
  • personal boundaries and consent,
  • keeping safe online and offline,
  • recognising unsafe situations and seeking help from trusted adults,
  • understanding how their bodies and emotions change as they grow and develop,
  • rights, responsibilities and respect for diversity.

RSE plays a vital role in safeguarding children by giving them the confidence, language and understanding they need to keep themselves safe and to know where to turn if they are worried about themselves or someone else.

How is RSE taught at Romilly?

The curriculum at Romilly Primary School is underpinned by the Curriculum for Wales and guided by the Welsh Government's RSE Code.

Our RSE curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that learning is appropriate to the age, stage of development and emotional maturity of our pupils. We use a range of high-quality resources, including elements of the Jigsaw programme, alongside materials from trusted organisations such as the NSPCC.

Lessons are delivered in a factual, inclusive and sensitive way by class teachers who know the children well. Learning builds progressively as children move through the school, ensuring that they develop understanding at the right time and in the right way.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

We recognise that parents and carers are children's first and most important educators. Our aim is to work alongside families, supporting conversations at home and providing information about the learning taking place in school.

In response to feedback from parents, we have included a range of useful resources below to help you find out more about RSE and the Curriculum for Wales.
