Extreme Heat Arrangements – June 2026

The safety and wellbeing of our pupils, staff and wider school community is always our highest priority.

Due to the exceptionally high temperatures forecast this week, Romilly Primary School has implemented a number of temporary measures to reduce the risks associated with extreme heat, including:

  • Additional water breaks and access to drinking water throughout the day.
  • Adapted playtimes and outdoor activities.
  • Restrictions on strenuous physical activity and PE.
  • Increased use of shaded and cooler areas of the school.
  • Additional monitoring of vulnerable pupils and staff.
  • Cancellation of school-run after-school clubs.
  • Daily review of classroom temperatures and weather forecasts.

Following a dynamic review of our school site and conditions within our buildings, we have also implemented a temporary partial closure from 1:00pm on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June 2026.

Whilst every effort is always made to keep the school open, four of our five teaching blocks are Victorian buildings and were not designed to maintain safe and comfortable temperatures during periods of extreme heat. Some classrooms reached temperatures of 29°C on Monday afternoon despite the control measures already in place.

A limited supervised provision remains available for families who are unable to make alternative childcare arrangements. This provision will be based in our air-conditioned and temperature-controlled areas of the school.

All decisions have been taken in line with our Whole-School Extreme Heat Risk Assessment and Management Plan and are reviewed daily.

This is a live situation and arrangements may change should weather conditions or official guidance change. Any further updates will be communicated to families via Arbor, email and the school website.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work together to keep our school community safe during this period of extreme weather.
